Dear Donors and Sponsors of the Sigma Lambda Beta Education Foundation:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generosity in funding the Opportunity for Wisdom Scholarship 2022-2023 but also the dreams of many enthusiastic and hardworking students among the SLB community. I am truly honored to be a recipient of this prestigious award.
I am currently a graduate student pursuing a M.Sc. in Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba in Canada. I am currently in the final track of my degree, looking forward to successfully defending my research dissertation by the end of this present year.
In the past years, I have participated in programs related to agricultural engineering as well as social entrepreneurship and education, always uplifting the values of community, scholarship, and generational wisdom, which I was able to learn from my biological family and my extended life and SLB family. Last year, I was given the opportunity to be the leader of a project that focused on the development of food growing techniques under artificial conditions for undeserved native communities up north in Canada. Last December I also initiated a community project in the slum where I grew up in Guatemala City, with the aspiration to help children to pursue a decent education despite socio-economic burdens. Currently, I am serving as an ambassador of my faculty, where my main role is to help develop healthy and welcoming environments for prospective and current students, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, multiculturalism, and scholarship. In addition, I continue being an active member in the community where I live here in Canada, being an active volunteer in local schools by being a science tutor, soccer manager and ultimately, a speaker spreading my story for others to believe in their ability and opportunity to transform their lives through education.
Finally, I truly believe that money is not indispensable in life, nevertheless, it represents a limitation to access certain human rights such as proper education. Growing up in a low-income family in Guatemala taught me to appreciate every single materialistic and non-materialistic thing that I have been given. This scholarship does go more than beyond a financial help. Indeed, this scholarship represents part of foundation and continuity of my path towards my educational success. On top of that, this money gave me the hope to help me bring my mom to my graduation ceremony next Spring 2023. She has been the main architect of all my success and happiness, and nothing but her presence in my graduation ceremony will make my heart the happiest on Earth. Knowing there are generous people, such as the SLB Foundation sponsors, in the world that genuinely help others without expecting anything, but their success keeps my hope in humanity alive and inspires me to imitate them in the future.
Once again, I would like to thank you for your generosity, caring and believing in student success. I truly appreciate your invaluable support which will help me to further my education and accomplish my goals, while also uplifting others to achieve their dreams.
Fraternally,
#153 Douglas “Hyperion” Santos
